How do I get started?

Make sure your speakers are turned on so that you can hear the instructions given on the first page (and the other sounds that come later).
On the yellow page type your name in the box, then click on Next Topic button.
On the blue Topic List page click on Topic A, then follow the instructions.
You can repeat the page as many times as you like, then click on the Next Page button.
If you don't want to do a page you can click on any of the buttons at any time.

How many names can we use?

Up to 6 different names can be put in. Type your name in the first time, (making sure you spell it right!) then whenever you play again you can click on the arrow at the right of the box, and click on your name. Otherwise, if you make a mistake when you type your name in the second time, it will be treated like a different name.

What if I don't put a name in?

There's no problem playing with Crotchet Beat with no name, you will see the scores pop up as usual, but they won't be saved for later, so you might want to write them down. If you go back to the Score page from the Topic List page, you won't be able to see your scores listed.

I get a problem when I first drag and drop a label

If a grey box with a red circle + white cross pops up with an error message starting MMSYSTEM296, then you have probably forgotten to put the CD in the CD drive. (If you have more than one drive, it must be the same one that the program was loaded from)
Crotchet Beat needs to get some of the sound files from the CD.

How do I get help?

Whenever you see Con Moto holding a HELP sign, you can click anywhere on his picture and a box will pop up which should give you the help you need for that page.
If you don't understand what you are supposed to do, and Con Moto can't help, then try asking someone else what they think, or copy out the page and show it to your teacher.
If you are still stuck, then you could
email Margaret (who wrote the program) or phone her on 01373 303529.

Do I have to finish a page once I have started it?

No. You can decide to move on at any time. Simply click on any of the buttons along the bottom of the page.

What happens to my score if I don't finish the topic?

Provided you gave your name at the beginning, the best score for each page you finished will be saved, and you can check on them by going back to the yellow Score page.
If you didn't use a name, I'm afraid you can only see the score for the page when the score box pops up. You won't see a total for the Topic unless you get right to the end of the Topic.

Tell me more about the scoring system

The score for each page you complete is usually calculated from how long you took, and how many mistakes you made, but each page is slightly different.
I have tried to set the levels so that a score of over 100 means you have done really well, and a score of over 80 is good.
Each person's scores are kept separate, of course, and just one score is kept for each page that is done. Each time you finish a page the score you got is compared with the score that has been saved for that page. If you have done better this time, then the new score is save, if worse then no change is made to the saved score.
When you finish a Topic then all the best scores for the pages in that Topic are added up to give the Topic score. This might include some best scores that you got a few days ago, as well as some that you have just scored.
If you don't get to the end of a Topic, then you won't see the box with the Topic score, but it will still be worked out and saved.

How do I erase the names and scores?

The only way to remove the names & associated scores is to delete the file that contains the details. This is called "scores.dat", and unless you changed the program location during installation of Crotchet Beat, it will be found in C:\Program Files|Andante Software\Crotchet Beat Grade 1.

What is the best score on any page?

All the pages are different, so there are many different ways of working out the score. In the table I have listed my personal best scores, and the score you would get if you were able to get everything right first time and finish the page in 1 second! 1 point is taken off the score for each extra second you take. Points are also deducted for wrong answers on many pages. However, speed isn’t everything, and it will be easier to move things accurately on some computers than others, especially on Topics C and D. Any scores over 100 are excellent!

*The time is really not very important for these pages, where you have to make up your own 2 bar rhythm. You can obviously get a high score by making a very simple rhythm. It is hard for the computer to give you a good score for being imaginative!

Please email Margaret if you think a certain page is particularly discouraging, or far too easy to get a good score. Comments will be taken into account when changes are made for the next version.
